Hey DJ, why are you playing that song in the first place?

One of the various pop culture phenomena within SL that I've always been curious about is the SL DJ.  I have met quite a few DJs, and several of them have large groups filled with rabid fans that show up to every major gig.  More likely than not, said DJ is your average citizen that knows how broadcasting software works and has a taste in music that others enjoy.  He or she is not likely to be a an infamous radio shock jock, a rock star that has persistent paparazzi, or is a DJ that has to open for Thievery Corporation (yes, I know there are a few exceptions!).  And yet, SL is a place where that average person can transform into one just as famous within the context of SL as a virtual venue.

Why is this?  I actually have no idea whatsoever.  Despite months of posing these kinds of (most likely irritating) questions to various and sundry DJ acquaintances, it seems that no one really knows.  I suspect it has something to do with the human love of music and the accessibility of it within SL for DJs and fans alike.  Or something.

I did enjoy being able to get a glimpse into the SL DJ culture when I talked with Mr. Resident Technical Genius Geek, Gecko Gorilla.  Gecko (known as "G" to his friends) has been DJing for about a year.  He's played at several clubs and has emceed for fashion shows and events like Relay for Life.  He also has a group of fans known as the "G Squad" that follow him around like NASCAR, and he's come by the nickname "DJ Gym Socks" or "DJ Socks" in a...well, interesting way.

We met outside The Warehouse, one of the clubs he DJs at, to chat while sitting on a bench outside.  It's rather new and has the admirable goal of staying "true to the music" and away from the triteness of the average SL club with it's customary "Best in Black" and "Biker Night."  [shudder]  Warehouse, I salute you.  If I hear one more extended-length "Hooooooooooo!" times ten while various blingtards beg me to vote for them as the best wearer of black, I really do think I'll lose it.  (I'm also really hoping the Warehouse crowd doesn't actually do that "Hooooooooooo!" thing, or I'll look like a jackass.  I probably should have checked up on that.)

A Short Introduction

There are about 5 gazillion blogs about SL.  Fashion, music, events, little green people that dress quite creatively...why do so many people feel the need to write about a completely virtual universe?

Actually, I think it's pretty neat.  I will admit to reading quite a few of them myself.  (I particularly relish the "comments" part, but maybe that's the "gawker of drama" in me.)

But what I can't get enough of are anecdotal and informal interviews with some of the shapers of this virtual pop culture. What inspires them? What makes them tick? Why do they keep logging on day after day? I've been fortunate enough to meet a few SL celebutants, fashion designers, content creators, and all around odd ducks. I decided to write the 5 gazillionth +1 blog because I think many of these characters I've encountered have something unique and interesting to say.

I have a few things in the works, including finding my inner neko (because really, it does *not* come naturally), conversations with who I call La Vampira of SL (she is *the* elite vampire), and shenanigans with an inadvertent marketing genius.

This blog is a work in progress. I'm very fortunate to have the super fantastic Gecko Gorilla of renowned DJ Gym Socks fame as the Resident Technical Genius Geek. Input is always appreciated! Feel free to contact me anytime, especially if you have some ideas on whom you want to see interviewed (or at least see me attempt a conversation with).
